Sony's 2005 lineup of LCD flat-panel HDTVs, now called the Bravia for some unknown reason, includes the KLV-S32A10E as its basic model. You can find this 32-inch HDTV compatible television online for as little as $ 1500, which makes the game more accessible, Sony has offered. Along with the input of another name-level models of the brand like Samsung LN-R328W and Sharp LC-32GA5U, the Sony KDL-S32A10E is still a far cheaper price than the slew of business-brand LCDs on the market. The real question is whether Sony has better performance than their competitors less expensive.
The appearance of the KLV-S32A10E is pretty basic. The panel was completed in silver with a very small black border about 1 inch wide around the screen, the speakers are mounted below. It sits on a swivel that can rotate around 30 degrees or left or right. Sony optional wall-mount kit, model SU-WL31, sold for $ 350.
Remote Sony showed a slight remodeling that adds the Wega Gate button to access the menu system. Although the remote control can control other types of gear, is unfortunately not backlit or illuminated at all. The internal menu system is quite simple – with some exceptions. To find definitions of basic and advanced image, you need to select the last item, which looks like a briefcase and is labeled Settings. Of course, we preferred to come in first in the list, rather than the past, behind the Favorite Channel lists and other features less useful.
The package of feature on this Sony is nothing to write home about. Its resolution of 1280 x 768 is standard for its class, of course, the panel can accept almost any signal, including PC. To watch HDTV, you will need to add an external tuner box.
Observe the usual adjustable Picture modes (Vivid, Standard, Pro, and so on), and the KLV-S32A10E remember the last time that the method used with each entry. Since the three modes are adjustable, you basically get three slots independent memory for each input, so you can adjust each input for different lighting environments, for example. This LCD also has the same Cool, Neutral and Warm-selectable color temperature settings Sony offered since time immemorial. The use of light sensor increases and decreases the contrast and brightness, depending on the amount of ambient light the room, we recommend turning it off for serious viewing. Unfortunately, the set has PIP (picture-in-picture).
Connectivity options the SONY DAV-S32A10E are relatively weak. The HDMI single tops the list. Other include a component video input (many games at this level has two), one VGA analog RGB input for computer connection, two A / V inputs that can connect to any S-Video or composite video sources and an RF antenna input.
We found the Sony KDL-S32A10E overall image quality a little disappointing. In its favor, performance of black level was impressive, thanks to the adjustable lighting, which can switch off the lamp output and get a decent depth of black. Unfortunately, the panel did not go black-on-black picture information, so the contrast ratio is somewhat compromised. We also noticed false contouring artifacts creation their ugly heads in dark scenes, such as opening few minutes of our black level torture test DVD Alien: The Director's Cut.
Decoding Sony's NTSC color pushes red severely, so we had to reduce the color level a little – and commit to complete saturation and punch – to make the skin tones in particular look natural. We had to back down 10 clicks on our sample review for the component input DVD and about 5 clicks to input we were using HDMI for high definition. It seems that Sony has chosen to be more accurate with their HD decoder is to decode NTSC, which is a mistake. The right way to do it is to have switch panel matrix color NTSC to HD automatically, Panasonic does this in some, if not all, of its plasma panels and LCD flat. We harp on this, because we'll probably see good old NTSC sources for a long time to come, especially on smaller sets, such as the KLV-S32A10E.
We also note that the use Cinemotion, says that Sony has 2:3 pull-down detection, no do not pass our test standard 2:3 (see box for more Geek). You may notice more irregular or mobile line artifacts when watching film based sources, primarily TV in prime time.
Course material looked very good while we were in front screen. Off-axis is a real problem with all flat-panel LCDs, and on the Sony, the reduction of brightness is dramatic, especially if you sit too high or low to the screen. For the best experience, you should position the panel so that your head is in the middle of the screen. From the ideal position scenes version of Vertical Limit Superbit DVD looked very sharp in detail as well.
HD from our DirecTV HD satellite feed looked sharp. Unfortunately, found that the panel out of rolls of about 20 percent of the horizontal resolution of 720p HD sources, as evidenced by a test pattern at 720p multiburst our Sencore generator HDTV signals VP403. This is a shame, but unfortunately is the norm rather than the exception, with fixed pixel HDTV screens.
Bottom line, Sony is not an excellent choice for those looking for the best performance of a flat-screen HDTV. Then again, we can not recommend any LCD flat panel, in this regard. Sony and others are more suitable for relatively less critical and can do a good job in brightly lit rooms. Unfortunately for the KLV-S32A10E, which can be said of many broadcasters budget, as the Maxent MX-32X3 and Syntax Olevia LT32HV, which cost much less than the Sony.
