Widescreen refers to the width of screen in relation to their height. This is called an aspect ratio of your TV screen. Regular TV have squarish 4:3 aspect ratio as most plasmas modern have the highest proportion of 16:9.

2) LCD and Plasma TV
This article highlights some of the characteristics of plasma and LCD, in contrast to older CRT (cathode ray tube) television technology. I will explore the differences between LCD and plasma tv in another article.
Both LCD and Plasma offer many advantages over traditional CRT TV. Their large flat panel displays have sharper images, deep contrast and less brightness. The aspect ratio of 16:9 movie is a must for serious film fans and players. Plasma and LCD is more elegant and less bulky and emit less radiation ray tubes.
The reorientation of the majority of consumers towards LCD and plasma televisions has led to a big drop in sales of CRT, and some companies have come to take these products off the market. Prices are falling for both plasma and LCD, and are getting smaller each week. Falling LCD and plasma TV prices mean great deals for consumers which is great news for all fans of the television. Basically the old CRT technology is outdated and will probably disappear altogether.
The smart choice when buying a new TV is to look at all the LCD and plasma tv has to offer. Now, personally, I prefer plasma over LCD, and I'll tell you why in another article.
