I need something special from Comcast using HDMI cables with new TV? HDMI cables worth it?
I just ordered a new plasma TV (42 "Panasonic) and two smaller LCD TV to other parts of our house. I also purchased HDMI cables to each tv and conditioner power line as an experiment for the plasma. I spoke Comcast today and they are telling me that to use the HDMI cables, I have to rent a box of them for $ 12 per month that comes with the cables. This seems like a rip off big me. 1. Does anyone know a way around this (ie renting your regular cable box and then connect to my tv with HDMI using some type of converter purchased elsewhere)? 2. They told me that a HDMI converter will do the signal looks much better, we will not be using HD cable, but only the "normal cable channel. Is this true? Thank you.
I'm not aware of any converter – For me, it would defeat the purpose of using the HDMI cable. You said it is upgrading its service for HD, correct? This is the box that they were referring to that said that you need. There really is not much point in using an HDMI cable, if you will not use the HD. You can use the component again and just get a good picture. Technically, HDMI will provide a better signal, but honestly, most people can not tell the difference, and since you are not using the HD does not matter anyway. Just curious as to why you are not upgrading to their HD service – for the value you've probably spent about HDMI cables, you can get some cables and components, instead of saving money could pay for the slight increase on your cable bill for a long time. HD only looks much better.
