Getting the most out of your LCD TV
So you bought a new big screen LCD. Congratulations! Now there is one last thing you need to do to maximize your potential new acquisition: Calibration! Let me help you get the most out of it so when your friends see it on first time, their collective jaws hit the floor.
The single most important action you can do is properly calibrate your new TV. Normally, all televisions come standard with your settings out of whack. So let's begin.
First, choose the site you will be watching TV the most. Also set the lighting to mimic the conditions under which you will be watching more often. Finally, check the placement of your TV and make sure that minimizes the amount of brightness you will receive.
Before you start adjusting the settings, we need the right tools. If you have a THX-certified DVD, you have them. Pop in a movie and load the calibration.
Let's take a look at the key settings: Brightness, Contrast, Sharpness, Color and Tint:
- Brightness Put it down until the drop-shadow-THX logo disappears
- Contrast: Raise it up to the darkest white disappears into lighter
- Sharpness: Max this out and back, down to the artifacts and halos disappear
- Color: as sharpness, max it and ratchet down to the colors that are appropriate
- Tint: Follow the instructions in the calibration program
Congratulations, you're done calibrating (provided you are satisfied with the results) to kick back, relax and watch your favorite shows in all its LCD glory! Now that you are an expert, you should get this FREE LCD TV and do it again to another room.
