If you are planning to replace your old tube TV with a plasma HDTV fantasy, but are concerned about the stories of "plasma burn-in and questions of life "here is what you need to know. The latest plasma technology used by reputable manufacturers that projections of life equal to the screens LCD, which is approximately 60,000 hours. Depending on your daily usage this can translate to anywhere between 12 and 55.
The early versions of plasma screens had a stream of annoying – the dreaded "burn-in" or "ghost image" effect. This problem was caused by an ongoing presence of static images, such as network logos and pictures browser, which over time resulted in permanent damage to the corresponding pixel on the screen. The "burn in" effect has to do with the properties of phosphorus used in plasma technology and the way it reacts to light and electrical impulses.
Fortunately, the quality of manufacturing has been working hard to eliminate this effect. In fact, the best brands today claim to have the burn-in resistance equal to that of a standard CRT screen. This has been possible thanks to advances in technology plasma, such as the use of phosphorus green (more resistant to burn-in) and technology of motion adaptation. The latter prevents the burn-in motion picture by microscopic (invisible to the human eye) that prevent static images on the screen recording.
Plasma 1080p HDTV represents the latest advancement in technology TV. So if you are planning to invest in one here are some important tips to maximize your life:
1. Plasma displays are usually more prone to burn-in in the first 200 hours of use. During this time (and beyond), it is recommended that you avoid displaying static images for more than an hour. Avoid interrupting your DVDs for more than 20 minutes to an hour and do not forget to turn off the unit when not in use.
2. Read your TV's User's Manual and familiarize yourself with its anti-burn-in features. Such features may include carrying configurations pure gray or white screen (blank screen) to recalibrate the pixels and erase any potential burn-in. This is especially recommended after the first 100 hours of use and later, from time to time, based on your type of use. Ensure following the anti-burn-in instructions for video games and other static content.
3. Watch them all in full screen mode to avoid the prolonged presence of static black areas around the active frame.
4. Instead of using the manufacturer's default setting of contrast, which is generally defined as 100%, reduce to 50% – especially during the first 200 hours of use. The only times you may feel the need to contrast the high quality is in a lighted room. To avoid this, turn off unnecessary lights and use other practical ways to darken the room while you're watching your plasma TV. Reduce the setting brightness on your TV accordingly (remember "less is better" for the longevity of your screen).
5. Equipment tests have shown that some brands are more resistant to burn-in "than others. The best performance include NEC, Sony, Pioneer and Panasonic. The technology used by Hitachi and Fujitsu (ALIS panel type) seems to be the most concerned with problems of burn-in. In addition, secondary (lesser known) brands could be affected with the same problem, due to less advanced technology.
6. Make sure there is enough space around your screen to prevent overheating of the unit. Keep it in a well ventilated area.
